How the cartridges are made

Game Design

Pocket Arcade borrows the immediacy and visual language of classic arcade play while implementing its games for the modern browser.

Browser first

A game should become understandable within seconds. The main interaction is placed directly on the page, controls are shown next to the playfield, and there is no required account or download before the first run.

Short feedback loops

Scores, timers, lives, fuel, speed, stage progress and other important state are kept visible where the game needs them. Difficulty should come from the mechanic rather than from hiding the rules.

Implemented for Pocket Arcade

The game code, interface treatment, level behavior and browser interactions on this site are implemented for Pocket Arcade. Familiar genres such as brick breaking, snake, racing or fixed-screen shooting may provide a recognizable starting point, but the project does not depend on third-party game binaries or embedded copies.

The site also avoids requiring proprietary assets simply to make a game function. Where audio is used, browser-generated sound is preferred when practical; where visuals are used, the interface and playfield are rendered as part of the project.

Progress and persistence

Several games use browser local storage for small convenience features such as best scores, unlocked levels or an audio preference. This lets a returning player keep lightweight progress without creating an account. Clearing site data in the browser can remove that local progress.

Performance and controls

The project is tested across keyboard, pointer and touch-oriented interactions where the game supports them. Layouts are designed to remain usable on narrow screens, while gameplay canvases and control regions suppress accidental selection and scrolling where that would interfere with play.

When a game has unusual rules, its page includes written instructions below the interactive area so the experience is still understandable outside the playfield itself.
